McCullers Group founder and CEO Mark McCullers recently shared his insights on starting and sustaining a career in sports on the November 30 episode of the WorkInSports podcast.

On the episode, titled “A Sports Executive’s Guide to Advancing in the Industry,” McCullers and WorkInSports Vice President of Content and Engaged Learning Brian Clapp discussed how McCullers’ first opportunity in sports laid the foundation for his rise through the industry, the value of sports startups and how it played a role in his decision to launch McCullers Group, and how a potential recession could affect the sports business.

McCullers has more than 30 years’ experience in the sports industry, having started as an assistant stadium manager for the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission. He went on to hold senior leadership positions with Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Columbus Crew, serving as President and General Manager alongside legendary owner and sports entrepreneur Lamar Hunt. In addition to helping build one of the league’s founding franchises, he led the development of Historic Crew Stadium, the very first soccer-specific stadium in the United States. He currently helms McCullers Group, which provides planning, project management, and optimization services to owners and developers of sports-anchored real estate developments.

“It was an enjoyable conversation,” said McCullers. “We covered a lot of topics that I hope can be of help, especially to young people considering a career in sports. It’s a decision I’ve never regretted, which is how a lot of people in our business feel I think.”
